K8048, somehow works, somehow doesn't

Okay, so I got the Velleman K8048. As well as that I have gotten the common communication problem saying that it can’t be found through the Progpic2 software it came with. So after many failed attempts at trying to figure out the problem I was close to giving up and buying an old PC to get an actual serial port that would detect it.

Although I found something that helped a little, but not completely.

There was this other software that I found. Picprog 2009. The program was actually able to detect my programmer and the pic that was in it. Although, it could only read the PIC and it couldn’t write anything into it. As well as that any function that I tried to do would make a pop-up message saying that the settings were different to the PIC in the programmer, after showing that message while trying to program it, an error would appear and it couldn’t program anymore.

Although, I guess that the hint that the programmer actually getting detected means I’m getting somewhere. But now I need to get past the configuration error that appears.

Any help?

What voltage to you provide to your K8048 ?
It’s must be at least 15V, maybe this is the problem.
It could also be a hardware problem…

The adapter works on 15V and as well as that all the components have been soldered in their correct places. I double checked everything. Although, I read somewhere that it doesn’t work with newer computers as they have an “emulated” serial port. If this is my problem, could there be any way to fix this besides from buying an older computer system?

No, the card doesn’t work with “emmulated” (USB routed RS232 ports) because they haven’t hardware handshaking lines.

I see, although is there any possible way to make it work for the handshaking lines? Perhaps a separate circuit to make it so or a program for my type of serial port?

Sorry for the double post, but it seems that I have fixed the problem. It’s working fine now. I had bought this other programmer with a DB9 serial cable included. I used this cable on the K8048 and plugged it into the computer. It’s working perfectly now. Perhaps you should check on the cable construction in your assembly manual, because it doesn’t seem to work well with certain computers.

Nice that it’s working now.
All lines that nessesary for the programmer hardware are connected, strange…
