i’ve read a lot of the posts about the k8048 serial to usb problem, some people seem to have had some success and others not so much and the velleman guys seem to just brush everyone off by saying that it says on the box that you need a free serial port on the computer, and if you don’t have one you just have to cut your losses and buy the updated version of this kit, so why are we still able to buy these kits? ( sounds like a money making ploy to me ) surly a big electronics company like velleman would know that serial ports were being phased out and the earliest complaint about the serial to usb problem i saw was from 2007 so they must have known about this problem at least 4 years ago.
it only makes sense to me that a company that knows there are an increasing number of problems with a product they sell would stop producing and selling kits like the K8048 unless there was an easy fix. people like me can’t, and shouldn’t have to, just go buy the updated version once i’ve already bought and built one that to my knowledge should have worked.
like i said i just bought and built a K8048 knowing that it uses a serial port, i wasn’t sure if my pc had one or not though, maybe i’m just retarded, or did a lot of you out there who have a K8048 think that surly if they still selling these things, that they would have to specify on the box that it’s not compatible with a serial to usb cable. since they don’t i just assumed ( as i’m sure a lot of you did ) that if my computer didn’t have a serial port i’d just use a serial to usb converter cable. obviously since 4 years have gone by with absolutely no effort from velleman to help out us “valued” customers, i’m pretty sure they not going to start any time soon.
but anyway before my rant becomes a 4 page essay, i’d just like to ask anyone and everyone who has managed to find a proper solution to this problem without needing to use rocket science or complex computer wizardry to please tell me what they did, it would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
