Hi,
I have checked everything twice, and all components are installed properly. One on main power nothing happens. Only led5 lights up by pressing the external switch. What can I do to check what is wrong?

Ik heb eerst nog de Triac vervangen, maar ook dat was helaas niet de oplossing.

Alleen led 5 brandt wanneer ik de externe knop indruk (op de deksel)
Ik heb ook de spanning gecontroleerd op de IC1 op pin 5 en 14 en die is ok. Ik zag deze tip elders in het forum.

I don’t want to offend but it looks like the soldering looks like it could use some help.

The soldering isn’t perhaps perfect but is done properly. You may be misled by the bridge we had to make, because one of the soldering points came loose of the print board.
There are nog soldering points where two points are connected (which shouln’t) due to a surplus of solder.
Please advise what steps I can make from here?

By the way, in your supplied resistants the R5 is not the right one according the technical drawing which tells me it should be 47 Ohm. Instead of the 47 Ohm you supplied 174K Ohm.
I checked this via the the table you supplied and via my supllier. I have installed the 47 Ohm as mentioned in the technical drawing, after I have installed the fault one first. Could this have caused any damage?

174 K is only available in the E24 range and higher. Normally Velleman always uses values of the E12 range… Almost impossible that a 174 K would be included.

A couple of remarks:

Soldering looks poor and might need rework.
Please try kit first in original setup before performing modification such as adding long wired to the leds (not recommended).
What did you connect to the output?
What mode did you select?
How did you connect the unit?
We’d recommend to get rid of the wires and install the leds as instructed before performing any further tests.
What was the colour code of the assumed ‘wrong’ resistor?

  • As mentioned before, the soldering maybay looks poor, but it is connected properly. I cannot imagine that any rework will lead to working unit, but you are the expert, so please provide any suggestions how to improve, thanks!
  • Please explain why the wires could be of any influence on the working of the unit? The wires are not longer than 20cm each. I took great care in connecting the leds and looked carefully at the polarity of the leds.
  • I connected a normal light bulb of 100W to the output
  • I cannot select any mode yet, because the unit does not perform the selftest, It doesn’t show any activity, besides led 5, this light up after pressing the external switch. So I do not know in which mode it is in.
    -What do you mean with: How did you connect the unit?
  • The colour of the wrong resistor was brown-violet-yellow. I have checked this with my distributor in his shop and they gave me the right resistor. The code on this resistor was definately different from the resistor supplied with the kit.

No, I think you’ve read the color code backwards… and brown will be black. Because of in doubt, you’ve read brown because it cannot begin with black. But if you read it: yellow-violet-black then you have your 47 ohms. So it was the correct resistor that was delivered…

It looks like you have a few cold and a lot of incomplete solder joint.
Those really need to be touched up.

You can always meassure the resistor with a DVM.

I have done all the rework on the solderings and I have removed the wirings and adjusted the leds directly on the circuit board.
Despite of all your advices, it did not change a thing unfortunately.

What I noticed thus far, is that R2 is getting real warm and TR 1 doesn’t warm up at all.
Still the only thing respond is Led 5 by pressing the external switch.

I would be really interested in some good advice, what I can test to find out what is wrong.
Otherwise I would appreciate Velleman to send me a new kit.

Hi,

It’s kind of hard to tell but in your pictures it looks like you may have the zener diodes mixed up.
ZD1 should be a 12v / 1.3 watt zenner.
If I remeber these are a little fatter then the rest.
It looks like you may have it mounted in ZD2.
If this is true you should check all off the the diodes.

Like I said it’s hard to tell.

Both diodes are mounted in the right spots. ZD1, the fatter one, is mounted correctly in the position for ZD1. So no mistakes made with the diodes?

Is somebody of Velleman able to react on this situation?

Make sure kit is assembled according to instructions in order to qualify for repair under possible warranty conditions.

I am happy with your suggestion, and will send it to you for investigation.
Are there any costs involved for the inspection/repair?
