Hi there,
I am searching for a possibility to control a locomotive of a garden railway.
K8004 looks interesting for that, but I have 2 questions:

  • How effective are short circuit and overload protection? What parts of the circuit are responsible for the protection?
  • Can the circuit be modified to realize a soft start and stop?

Check the diagram: the power resistors on the board are part of the soft-start circuit.
We suggest you also Google for the datasheet of the IC, this will allow you to check the specs in detail.

Thanks, but what about my question on short circuit protection?
Also the schematic diagramm in document H8004IP is not clear, because +V and -V are connected.

Difficult to answer.
Effectiveness depends on your circuit/application/circumstances.
Experimenting will be required.
