I finished assembly of the K6501 kit and it responds correctly to the manual commands noted in the assembly manual However I cannot get it to answer a call. I followed the procedure to change the ring response from +/-8 rings to +/-3 rings so it would pick up before my voice mail answered. When I completed the ring response procedure, Output 1 turned on to confirm, but it remained on. Is this correct? ---- Does the change to +/-3 rings stay programmed if the device main power is interrupted? — Does the Switch circuit (terminals next to the output1 terminals) have to be ON (closed) for the unit to operate)? ---- Finally, is there a compatibility issue due to differences between U.S. and European phone systems? I assume phone terminals A and B should correspond to the U.S. “Tip” and “Ring” wires but do not know if the K6501 requires specific phone terminal assignments for U.S. operation.
Carefull, this kit does not feature eeprom, so the 3/8 setting is lost when the power is removed.
Unit is compatible with classic PSTN US phone system. The switch input does not need to be activated.
Do you get feedback tones when the unit picks up ?
Thanks, I believe I was losing the 3 ring setting by interrupting the power during my testing. I was not receiving any sort of feedback except the ring tone on my phone but I was hanging up on the 5th ring to stop my voice mail from picking up. I’ll try again and keep the power on. NEW QUESTION: If the switch does not have to be ON, what is its purpose?
It allows you to monitor the status of a switch (open or closed) from a remote location by telephone.
E.g. You connect a thermostat to the switch input and set it to a certain temperature. Next, when you activate e.g. the heating with one of the relays, you can check if it is actually working.
I am making progress but I am not to the finish line yet. I reset the ring response to the +/-3 setting and it was confirmed by illumination of the Output 1 LED and the LED remained illuminated – is this correct? I then called the device and the LINE LED (RED) started flashing after the 3rd or 4th ring, but I received no audio feedback on the phone I used to call the device. After the 6th or 7th ring my voice mail announcement started, indicating that the call was not answered by the 6501. After I ended the call, the LINE LED turned off after a delay of about 15 seconds. So, it appears it knows it is being called but is not responding. I do not know if it makes a difference, but I am calling the device with an Iphone.
Apparantly it pics up the phone but the line does not see that the unit has picked up.
A classic mistake with this kit is that the power transistor which is mounted at the edge of the board (T7) has been 180° inverted. Check if this is the case. This transistor is part of the current source circuit that puts a load on the line once the unit has picked up.
No luck reversing the T7 transistor. I originally had the transistor installed with the heat sink facing in toward the center of the board. I am assuming that the side of the transistor body with the exposed metal is the heat sink, if this is correct then I believe I had it installed in accordance with the instructions. However, I did reverse the transistor per your previous message but with the same result. The device recognizes the incoming call but does not answer. With the transistor in both positions I checked continuity between the transistor leads and the PCB conductors. I am confident there were no open connections between the transistor and the board.
This is my 3rd Velleman kit and the other 2 worked great. I have a multi-meter and a perpetual desire to succeed, as long as you offer suggestions I will use them.
Do not reverse the transistor if its original position was correct. It is possible that it is defective right now.
It is kind of strange that you do not hear any feedback tones when the unit picks up the phone.
Is relay RY1 energized when the unit picks up ? If not, check RY1, D1, T1, R6.
Just kind of wondering.
Are you using VOIP?
The reason I ask is I think the Voltages are a little different.
If this is the case just to test maybe you could take it to a friends house that has a POTS (Plain Old Telephone) line and test it there.
