Just put together the k8048

Hi all

I’ve just put my new k8048 together (my first go with a soldering iron since school!). Everything seemed to go ok, except I wasnt sure which way round the cathode should go on the board for the LED’s. But I didnt know about this forum at the time, so carried on regardless. Plugged it in, and no lights or signs of life. I’ve tried connecting it to the computer, but wasnt expecting anything to happen, considering no led’s are on. And nothing happened.

I havent connected the included chip yet, as I didnt want to risk doing any further damage. I’m using the unregulated power supply that maplin recommended, and a RS232 cable.

Could anyone suggest the best way to go about troubleshooting this, or point me in the direction of a reference for troubleshooting this please? This is my first real electronics project, although I’ve got some common sense (other than plugging it in when I wasnt certain about the polarity of the LED’s!).

the correct orientation of the LED’s is as follows:
Hold the PCB with the silkscreen writing in a readable position, the RS-232 connector on the lower left.
The flat (Cathode indicator) on the side of each LED should be…
LD1 - LD6 - facing right.
LD7 - facing down. (Green)
LD8 - facing left.
LD9 - facing left.

For future reference, LED polarity can be indicated two ways:
1 - the flat (Cathode side)
2 - unequal length ‘legs’… Long leg = Anode (+), short leg = Cathode (-)
