HPS10 AC+DC voltage range

Hi,

I’m new to using an oscillioscope and purchased the HPS10 as way to start learning.

I’m a bit confused about the input specifications in the manual. The box cover said “Suitable for measurements on … mains voltage applications”, but the manual says Maximum input voltage 100V peak (AC+DC), 200 V peak-peak (AC only).

I’m trying to diagnose a humming transformer and, I’m told, one of the primary reasons for this is DC on the AC line.

This seemed like a great thing to check out with my new oscillioscope - I was thinking I might be able to see the 120v input power offset by a few volts above or below 0 and thereby confirm that theory.

So, I have 2 questions:

  1. Given that the US wall outlet voltages are about 120V, will I be able to check this with the HPS10 without blowing out something in the oscillioscope?

  2. Is what I’m trying even a reasonable way to go about this?

Thanks!

Stan

You will have to set your probe in X10 position.
Then it is possible to measure higher voltages.

To make the scope have the correct calculations, set also the X10 option in the scope. See page 44

NEVER MEASURE HIGH VOLTAGE IN THE X1 POSITION

Thanks for the information!

I will set the probe and scope to the X10 positions before measuring.
