COM-Init-Error - Help!

Hi

Ok board built up, LD7 on (power), LD9 flashes in either position but the software keeps giving me this dam error saying ‘COM-Init-Error’. I try different com ports and it says the same thing except on com1 where it just says it can’t find K8048 :open_mouth:

Any ideas?

Are you sure that the cable is OK ? (full connected or made by schematic in manual ?)
Assembly problem ?
The problem is just that it is difficult to debug…

Hi

Checked all pins with a multimeter, all connected where they should and no shorting to other pins.

Also checked them directly from the contacts in the plug/sockets and all was ok.

No idea how to find the fault here.

If all connections and the board is OK, it must be the serial port, maybe uncompatible handshaking line’s ?
You can only check this by testing on different PC’s
The power supply must also be 15V at least. (or > 12V unregulated)
I see also the pictures of your PCB, are you realy sure that all solderjoints are correct ? I just ask, I can’t check it by mail…

Hi

Yes the solder joints are all ok. I had some trouble with the IC sockets (thanks to the instructions saying capacitors first - which are taller) but I desoldered them (nasty job) and re soldered them back into place.

I will try another computer at some point.

Interesting about the power supply though…

I’m using a unregulated variable voltage mains adapter so I would assume its ok?

I built the USB kit last year (maybe the year before that) and it worked perfectly straight away. No problems with it at all.

Right I’ve tried it on another computer and it STILL does not work.

Please will you start giving me some help.

Propably it’s a hardware problem with the kit, you can always send it to us via your local dealer for repair.

Hi, I’ve been having exactly the same problem. When I try and blow my code onto a PIC with the software that came with the K8048 I get “K8048 not found at COM1” when I select COM1 and “COM-Init-Error!” when I try any of the other ports in the port menu of the progpic2 application (the other ports don’t exist on my computer as far as I’m aware).

I wondered if it might be a driver problem, do I need to install any drivers for the port I’m using or should it just work when I plug it in?

There are no drivers to install. The program access directly the serial port.

i had this problem in my computer. i’m not sure in this solution, but you can try:

  • put selector (SW5) in the central position (standby)
  • start Progpic2.exe and try write programm. you’ll get error: No pic on board…
  • put selector (SW5) in the lower position (prog) and try write programm again.
