APS230 battery

Hi all!

I recently (October) bought an APS230, mainly for looking at car engine electrics and also to learn a bit more about electronics (I’m not in any way professional, just an interested amateur). I really like the 230 and am having fun looking at all the new things I can see with it.

My only problem is with the battery. I charged it initially according to the instructions, but the battery indicator nearly always shows empty. The display stays on for a long time (I left it on for well over an hour the other night) but the indicator is always there showing an empty battery symbol. Occasionally, if I switch it on and then unplug the power, the battery briefly shows half full, but after a few seconds goes back to empty. I’ve never seen it full.

I think the unit was new stock, so hope it’s not an old, dying battery. Is there any way I can reset the charging status (ie let it “relearn”), for example by running it down and recharging (this hasn’t worked so far)?

I’ve noticed a lot of my rechargeable batteries don’t seem to hold their charge very well, but many of them (phone, PDA, portable DVD) were bought in Britain, so I don’t know if the lower mains voltage here might be the culprit?

If there isn’t any way, and the battery is on the way out, does anyone know where I can buy a new battery in the US? The US site does not list it and the search doesn’t find one. I didn’t have any luck with Google either, only European hits.

Thanks in advance! I love this thing!
